The Open Range Breakout strategy became well known in the 1980s. The book Day Trading With Short Term Price Patterns and Opening Range Breakout by trader Toby Crabel is perhaps the most famous work on this strategy.

It’s a fairly simple trading approach, used by both professionals and beginners. In the pre-market opening phase, one or more stop entries are placed, which are then executed on the breakout when the market opens.

With this strategy, trades are placed on the 1‑minute chart. The Open Range, also called the opening range, is defined, and you speculate on a breakout after the official market open. This strategy can be applied to many markets, such as stock indices (DAX, EuroStoxx, Dow, S&P 500, etc.), bonds (Bund Future, etc.), commodities (WTI, Brent Oil, etc.), precious metals (Gold, etc.), and individual stocks. Currencies like EUR/USD will be supported in an upcoming update.

When defining the time frame for the Open Range there are many different approaches. While some DAX traders choose the high and low between 9:00 – 10:00, others recommend using 8:00 – 9:00, 8:00 – 9:15, or 9:00 – 9:45. Many traders prefer the DAX range of 8:01 – 9:00 because there can still be large price jumps at 8:00, so they wait one additional minute here.

For the Dow or S&P 500, the first 45 minutes after market open are recommended for the Open Range, typically from 15:30 to 16:15. But every trader has their own strategy here as well.
